b. 1989, Rosmalen, The Netherlands
Thomas Trum is a multi-disciplinary artist working at the intersection of art and design. With a self-imposed, restrictive practice that exclusively focuses on line and color, Trum showcases a keen understanding of spatial composition and the material qualities of paint.
In his exploration of how to make a line, Trum develops unconventional tools like giant felt-tip pens and custom-built rotating spraying machines. His works on canvas are applied with a giant squeegee and special ink controlled meticulously by the artist's hand and body. His drawings are similarly precise, drawn carefully with a super-sized felt pen.
Intrigued by large vehicles such as agricultural machinery, Trum fashions cyborg-like paint sprayers with giant rotating arms to distribute colorful gradients of hypnotic, drippy loops. Whether researching the behavior of paint on paper or expanding public spaces with his colorful large-scale work, Trum gives nuance to the fundamental practice of line drawing.
Trum studied at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. His work is represented in public and private collections including the Noordbrabants Museum, AkzoNobel Art Foundation and Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam.
