Studio Visit: Curtis Kulig

The Hole is proud to present our summer Tribeca exhibition, a special project by New York-based artist Curtis Kulig. Timed with the release of his Front DOOR book documenting the eclectic mix visitors to his Kenmare studio (2016-2021), this exhibition turns our Tribeca location over to Curtis for the summer where we can all do a "studio visit" to see his new work and that of over twenty of his friends.

We are transforming the gallery entrance into his old studio entryway (above) where visitors can buzz in for a visit, inviting the public to experience the same threshold crossed by thousands of artists, collaborators, collectors, neighbors and friends over the years. The installation transforms the publication into a shared physical experience, offering a rare glimpse into the community that has shaped Kulig's life and work.

Inside is an art studio hangout vibe with with copies of the new book handy to peruse, and on the walls hangs an assortment of artworks by Kulig and over twenty friends. Mark Gonzales, Lizzi Bougatsos, Stefan Bondell, Richie Kahn, Gray Sorrenti, Federico De Francesco, Quinn Batley, Lola Schnabel, Lance De Los Reyes, Markus Mazza, Brianna Lance, Jesse Edwards, Mint and Serf, Nick Farhi, Max Blagg, Joshua Woods, Alessandro Simonetti, Bobby Waltzer, Yves Scherer, Issa Lish, Rob Cristofaro, Lua Beaulieu, Colleen Combs, Hollis Wilson, Gogy Esparza and many more.

About the book: The book catalogues images captured between 2015 and 2020 through the security camera at the entrance of Kulig's SoHo studio on Kenmare Street, documenting five years of daily arrivals, unexpected encounters, and the creative community that gathered around his front door. What began as a practical security camera evolved into an intimate archive of New York life, preserving the relationships, personalities, and fleeting moments that shaped both the studio and the city. In Kulig's words:

"A collection of images from my studio Front DOOR security camera documenting the foot traffic of my friends, family, loved ones, colleagues, collaborators, collectors, delivery men, dilettantes, strangers, psychos, loud-mouths, lap dogs, sycophants, vandals, house sitters, hangers-on, and visitors in the night. A true sum of the parts, the people melting into the pot of my New York City. This is that gumbo, bound, printed, and published."
