The Hole is pleased to return to The Armory Show for our seventh year with a solo booth by Atlanta-based Monica Kim Garza. Garza is know by her larger-than-life bold female protagonists, whether in thick and textured oil paint or smooth charcoal drawings and paintings on paper.
Garza was selected for the Focus section highlighting artists and galleries of the American South—a vital region to the American art landscape, and home to some of the country’s most celebrated artists. This year's Focus is curated by Jessica Bell Brown, Executive Director of the Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University. This section allows Garza to present a highly personal reflection of her evolution as an artist: “Having been raised in the state of Georgia, I am honored to represent the South and let the viewers see the world through the lens of this Georgia Peach."
Monica Kim Garza (b. 1988 New Mexico) has gained widespread recognition through her vibrant portrayals of women of color. Garza rejects the male gaze, celebrating confident and uninhibited women through her figurative works. Visually her paintings are lively and instantly recognizable, experimenting with form and contour, she reimagines the classical female nude in oil and acrylic, building up paint to sit inches off the canvas.
