For Dallas Art Fair Projects, we are sending exuberant works from four female artists who use play as a creative strategy in their diverse paintings, drawing and sculpture. Newly vaccinated, we are excited for the opportunity to get out of New York for a second and cut loose!

Serbian artist Maja Djordjevic uses the rudimentary language of MS paint to create handmade enamel artworks with nude female figures. Her piece I Will Play! was the inspiration for this project; the insistent optimism and intense energy of the neon-topped hopscotch painting was the exact vibe we wanted for this spring show.

Misaki Kawai includes a classic painting, a brand-new painting, and a giant pettable emoji sculpture from her recent body of work shown in the National Gallery of Victoria Triennial and The Hole this January. She uses a Japanese style of “heta-uma” literally ‘good-bad’, to show the evocativeness of rudimentary rendering and onomatopoetic repetition to name her works (Moko moko means fluffy).

Monica Kim Garza is an Atlanta-based artist known for her figure paintings of nude brown women doing all kinds of stuff. Whether being normal sitting around smoking cigarettes, or doing nude jogging, her works are loose in execution and casual in feel. What could be more chill than some nude hiking or nude biking?

Morgan Blair makes drawings from colored children’s clay to sketch out the 3D-looking forms of the paintings she wants to paint. Improvisational-feeling and full of irreverent color gradients, her works have an immediacy to them despite being painstakingly created with tons of precise tape and airbrush.
