NADA Foreland Art Fair 2023
July 21st-23rd, 2023
Extended view through 2024
111 Water Street, Catskill, New York
The Hole will present Adam Parker Smith at NADA Foreland, open to the public this Friday through Sunday, July 21st through 23rd in Catskill.
Cupid Triumphant is a precisely compressed version of a classical statue depicting Cupid holding a bow in one hand and an arrow in another, a quiver on his back, with Hercules's golden lion skin hanging over a tree stump behind him. He is flanked by Apollo's lyre, Jupiter's thunderbolt and Mars's helmet, each of these accoutrements having been placed at Cupid's feet in tribute to his superior power, one to which both humans and gods are subject.
For this series, Adam Parker Smith - working with a team of master carvers, a seven-axis reductive robot, and the digital research teams at museums like the Uffizi - rendered original Hellenic and Romantic-era sculptures in 3D modeling programs before digitally compressing each of them into a compact cube, then painstakingly chiseled out of a Carrara marble block. The ancient stone draws a material through-line between the sculpture Smith has chosen for his homage, the better to defamiliarize these paradigmatic works as they appear before the viewer, radically reshaped.
