NADA NEW YORK 2023
THE HOLE | MATT BELK
BOOTH 3.12 (3rd floor)
OPENING: Thursday, May 18th from 2–4pm
548 West 22nd Street, New York, NY, 10011
The Hole is delighted to present Wild an immersive hunting cabin installation featuring paintings by Matt Belk. Working in airbrush and pencil on wood panel Matt Belk’s inventive layering reconsiders mannish scenes of game hunting. Key players in Belk’s scenes are his airbrushed hunting dogs. Like Courbet’s handsome and vicious hounds, Belk’s own dogs chase duck, pheasant and salmon through hazy wetlands and forests. Loyally they present prey to the viewer. The uncanny gaze of Belk’s animals relegates the comfortable, nostalgic memories of an L.L. Bean-type outdoorsmanship to a bygone era.
Matt Belk (b. 1988, Omaha, Nebraska) has participated in all three iterations of The Hole's summer 2022 group exhibition, Manscaping, in New York City, Los Angeles and Paris, and in international art fairs in Taipei, Mexico City, Madrid and Cologne. He has had solo exhibitions across Oregon and Nebraska. Belk received a BFA from the University of Nebraska and lives and works in Reedsport, Oregon.
