SELF- EVIDENT TRUTHS 2012

The Hole is excited to present a one night only photo exhibition on Tuesday May 29th by iO Tillett Wright. The evening will be hosted by Terence Koh, Venus X, Slava Mogutin, and James Lecesne with performances by Cavemen and Bianca Casady of CocoRosie. Prints will be on sale off the wall for $10 and all funds will go to the continuing efforts of Self Evident Truths (www.selfevidentproject.com).

In 2010, Tillett Wright began a project titled Self Evident Truths, photographing anyone that felt like they qualified to fall on some part of the LGBTQ spectrum, from bisexual, to transgender. Shot in simple black and white, in natural light, with no makeup or styling, the photos emulate Avedon’s In The American West and August Sander’s People of the 20th Century, and are intended to humanize the very varied face of gays in America today. “Guess what, we look just like you, your mother, your brother, or the coworker sitting right next to you.”- says Tillett Wright about the project. What started as 50 portraits shot in New York City quickly turned into nearly 2,000, and will eventually be 10,000 portraits, shot all over the US. She continues to photograph anyone in the United States that is, or EVER has been, anything other than 100% straight. This exhibition is a celebration of Wright’s ongoing Self Evident Truths project to photograph and challenge the masses to look at the subject’s faces and to tell them they deserve anything less than equality.
