Our Volta 11 booth features new linen works by Matthew Stone. The works live somewhere between painting and photography are made by the artist painting on glass, then 3D scanning the topography of the brushstrokes, composing the work in a 3D rendering program, and printing it onto selectively primed raw linen.
These works take painting as a genre on as a topic; his 3D techniques break with the history of painting on a flat surface, lifting the strokes into a virtual and autonomous space. Using form and color to create movement and excitement, the artist seeks to “challenge the established worship of paint as untouchable cosmic flesh” while nonetheless capitalizing on it’s manipulative emotional power.
On the last two days of the fair we will unveil two outstanding new works by Joe Reihsen. The trompe-l’oeil texturing of Reihsen’s abstract brush strokes form an interesting counterpoint to the depth and surface in Stone’s works.
